Jeff Santos Essays - Ethics, Criminal Law, Law, Codes Of Conduct
Jeff Santos 2/12/2018 Western Civilization Prof. Lurie Lex Talionis The Law of Reciprocity" Lex talionis is a principle code that is found in the Babylonian law that says "whereby a punishment resembles the offense committed in kind and degree." It was thought that if the society was not abided by this law, then people would always look to seek revenge on those who hurt them. At times, it would lead to someone's death or destruction of one's family. That is if and only if the two were within the same social status. Due to all of this, Lex talionis is considered or interpreted as Hammurabi's (1792-1750 BC) favorite line "an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth". Hammurabi was one of the kids during the First Babylonian Dynasty. Lex talionis also follows the law of exact reciprocity and an example of this is if someone was to go to kill another person, then the criminal will be punished by having his or her life taken in return for killing the other. This can also be interpreted as "law of retaliation". That being said, a death does not always follow another death. As lon g as the retaliation is very minimal in the crime, basically anything is fine. For instance, instead of a punishment leading to another death, the criminal will pay a sum valued of the life he took and move on with his life. Obviously, these types of cases are more likely to occur as the modern day proceeds, where "an eye for an eye" becomes obsolete. Although precise punishment was the preferred way back in the Mesopotamian Era, "an eye for an eye" was not always the correct style of going about it. In my opinion there should have been better forms of reciprocity instead of dealing with crimes with more crimes. However, I do agree that punishment for a crime is a must, but they should vary depending on the severity and the circumstances of the crime itself. While lots may think that Lex talionis will be there control to mellow out the crime rates, it can also establish fear into the society where any little thing can be punishable to the full extreme that the law enforces. To add, a person in power may also take matters into their own hands and take actions as they please. Lex talionis has an extremely thin line that does not give you much course of action after a crime is committed. There should be some type of flexibility in the level of crimes and punishment. Does murder and stealing or lying have the same punishment as eac h other? Murder and stealing are two totally different crimes so where the line in the sand should be drawn? In most cases the line was not drawn but for me all crimes should be judged based on the severity of the crime and the circumstances of punishment should vary. Adding on top types of crimes, according to the Bible a lie is a sin which would mean that lying would be a possible serious punishment. In order to prevent one from telling a lie is to simply cut his or her tongue off. Everyone has lied at some point of their life so in that case, everyone in the village would be walking around without a tongue. Another thing you have to think about is what if it was a child performing the act of lying or stealing. In the case of stealing, sometimes they do not might not have known any better. So what does this mean? Do they get their hand cut off just like the rest? The child has done nothing to be put into the situation but it was simply forced into it because of the society it lives in. In the child's case, instead of mutilation, a better option may be to return what was taken. In my opinion you should punish the child with some type of work because usually children have a low work ethic and they do not want to work for anything especially whe n they do not get anything in return. After all, a boy or girl with a disability will do no good for anyone.

Cable vs DSL essays
Cable vs DSL essays While the computer industry continues to grow, the need for higher speed internet access increases. Games and digital media both have the capability to be played over the internet. To perform decently, a higher speed internet connection is needed. Two types of high speed internet connections available to home users are cable modems and a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). Cable modems run off of the pre-existing coaxial cable that is already wired in most homes for TV. DSL transfers data through existing phone lines and does not tie up the telephone line used for talking. They both are a lot faster than normal phone lines, but there are many variables to each that determine which may be better. These consist of the speed and reliability, the price for the setup and service, and the availability of the service. Cable modem service is a reasonable choice for a high speed internet connection. This service is usually controlled by the local cable company that runs the cable TV service. In Frederick, Adelphia is the company that distributes this service. The speed of an internet service is measured by how many bits per second it can transfer over the connection to the provider. Normal measurements are either in kilobits per second (kbps) or Megabits per second (Mbps). A kilobit means one thousand bits and a mega bit means one million. Cable modem speeds can range from 512 kbps to two Mbps download and 128 to 384 kbps upload. Customers using cable modems in the same area, usually share the same line the data travels through to the service provider. When there are many customers in the area that use the cable modem service, it can impact the performance of the cable modem. The transfer rates may fluctuate between 256 kbps to two Mbps. The price of the service can be pretty reasonable too. The average price per month for the service is $30.00 to $50.00. The most expensive part about getting a cable mode ...

Computer science and information technology major personal statement Essay
Computer science and information technology major personal statement - Essay Example I noticed that the lock was very convenient since we never had to bring the key again. I started to dream about owning a smart house where electronics will do everything for us, such as tasks scheduling, voice commanding, decisions making, etc. Since coming to the U.S., I have seen people using iPhones to dim lights in their houses. I realized my dream is actually achievable, yet even that did not seem like enough. I want houses that are even ââ¬Å"smarterâ⬠, and I wish one day everyone can own one of these houses. I want to customize my own smart house instead of those that exist already. Looking back on the past, I realize t that my dream had become more of a reality when I got to use computers.à The first time I used a computer I use it to play games only. I started to play a Japanese web game (livly) in 2005. By chance the game allowed me to customize my own homepage with HTML. I started to write simple HTML for my page. Eventually, I spent more time exploring the World Wide Web and discovered that there are programming languages for web pages which can do more than a markup language. I managed to read a book about PHP4 and MYSQL which I borrowed from the library. Although I did not have enough knowledge to understand everything, I read through the whole book and tried my best to understand all of the content. At the same time, my achievement in writing simple Visual Basic code in high school encouraged me even more to explore the computer field.à In 2009 I had a very special experience. I participated in a regional championship of the Worldskills Competition in Office and I was glad that I had learnt a lot in the field of software application from the training course I had taken. I was allowed to explore Microsoft Office at a deeper level by implementing VBA and the built-in library functions in Microsoft Excel. A year after I participated in another competition with participants from Hong Kong and Macau. I got a chance

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Essay Example for Free
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Essay The research gives the patient as well as the doctors and other healthcare professionals the education to be able to make the best decisions possible with treatments for each different individual as well as the support of the Government in this research. ââ¬Å"The economics of medical product development determines how pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies establish their funding priorities. According to industry estimates, it takes an average of $800 million and 10-15 years to develop a new drug, medical device, or biologic and bring it to the marketâ⬠[ (Resnick, 2003) ] Scope The overall scope of PhRMA is to do research in improving the quality of healthcare and how to do this. With the ultimate goal being patients receiving health care that is most efficient. Making sure that the research that is done is prioritized by the needs of the patients as well as society as a whole, having the research cover not only specific treatments costs and savings, but the costs of all healthcare treatments as a whole. As well as making sure that all technologies are used appropriately in all of healthcare. Design The design of PhRMA is to make sure that the research that is done is quality research. The data needs to be sufficient in nature as well as having the studies that are done show both the opportunities to improve as well as the strengths to improve upon. Making sure that the research that is done is up to date in this ever changing field so that it is providing the best results possible. The research needs to be both of a broad nature as well as a specifically direct nature, covering aspects that are important to society and the patients. Considering both economic issues and how well patients can be productive members of society, doing additional research to get patients to that point if they are not. Application PhRMA needs to make sure that the research that they are doing shows that not all patients are equal in the needs that they have medically and that if the research is not done on a personal level and done instead on a population level then the results will not show the individuals needs. In short, research that is done on a broader spectrum is only one way that can help people and the doctors to make an informed decision on care. With all of the technology that is out in the world of healthcare people needs to be informed on the other options that they may have for treatment. The government research should consider a balance in communicating the findings of its research. Giving access to peer reviewed results so that treatment decisions are well rounded before a decision is made. ââ¬Å"Government decisions related to the funding and conduct of health outcomes research should be made through open, transparent procedures that ensure appropriate and timely involvement of stakeholders such as patients, health care professionals and medical researchers on issues such as proposed research goals, study designs and communication of study results. â⬠[ (Resnick, 2003) ] In this communication, keeping in mind that all people can react differently to different treatments making sure to keep the needs of the patients as well as the value in mind. Discussion The article that I read was very interesting. I did not realize with the complication of research, especially with in the healthcare industry exactly how much of it really does affect the economy. Giving patients the variety in the different treatments that they receive can have a positive effect on the economy. It can over time change pricing (costs inputs), and with additional research that is constantly done on the variety of the treatments over time will help to create medical advances over time.à In the mission statement of PhRMA it states ââ¬Å"To conduct effective advocacy for public policies that encourage discovery of important new medicines for patients by pharmaceutical and biotechnology research companies.

Music and Media Can Be Detrimental to Children :: Argumentative Persuasive Essays
Music and Media Can Be Detrimental to Children Parents will argue that other people are the reason their children are violent and usually take absolutely none of the blame, when in reality they should be taking a lot of the blame for violence among children. I believe media as a whole, including television, radio, movies, video games, news, etc, can be very detrimental to society and leads to a lot of this violence among children with which we are dealing. I was always taught what goes in your head has to eventually come out, so shouldn't you put in only good stuff? "Critics claim that music negatively affects teenagers by repeatedly exposing them to themes such as Satanism, substance abuse, murder, suicide, and sexual violence, which may be heavily reinforced and normalized by the frequency of their portrayal" ("Youth and Violent Music"). I think there are too many television shows that run between the hours of three and five in the afternoon, which is when most children watch television, that make violence their main theme. Also during those hours, there are music video countdowns playing on just about every channel to which you flip. The only things kids learn when they watch these videos is how to abuse their wives, how to shoot a gun at someone, how to violently deal with a bully at school, how to dress so sexy that all the boys will like them, etc. Kids idolize anyone on television, especially if they're a popular songwriter or singer. Most parents know that children imitate whatever they see and hear, so wouldn't you think if parents let them watch these over-sexy and violent videos that their children are going to want to look and act just like what they're watching on television? "Several major rap artists have been charged with violent crimes in real life, and many worry that their actions seeming ly condone the violent messages in their music. Their celebrity status also serves to glamorize their violent behavior" ("Youth and Violent Music"). There are many cases dealing with the death of one or more children due to them "trying-out" a move they watched on television that "look real cool". Even if there was only one case, that would be one too many for me not to think we had taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Administrative Theories in Public Administration Essay
I have never thought that administrative theories in Public Administration has been established back in 1800 with theorist who have discovered or developed and now has been part of the system of the Philippine government. The earliest contributors to our understanding of management theory included practicing managers as well as social scientist. More recent theorist has tended to be academic or management consultants. The early theorist can be divided into 2 main groups ââ¬â the practicing managers such, as Taylors and Fayol and the social scientists, such as Mayo and Mc Gregor. Meet the Mr. Taylor, the theorist of Scientific Management. Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915), one of the early practical manager-theorist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, spent the greater part of his life working on the problems of achieving greater efficiency on the shop-floor where he manages. The solution he came up with was based directly on his own experience at work, initially as a shop floor worker and later as a manager. He pioneers scientific management which includes: The systematic study of the relationships between and tasks to redesign the work for higher efficiency. Taylor sought to reduce the time a worker spent on each task by optimizing the way the task was done. Scientific Management Theory Organizations were seeking ways to better satisfy customer needs Machinery was changing the way goods were produced Managers had to increase the efficiency of the worker-task mix According to him, there are 4 Principles to increase efficiency that are: a. Study the way the job is performed now and determine new ways to do it. Gather detailed, time and motion information; try different methods to see which is best b. Codify the method into rules ââ¬â Teach to all workers c. Select workers whose skills match the rules set in step2 d. Establish a fair level of performance and pay for higher performance ââ¬â Workers should benefit from higher output But, Taylor recognizes that the measures he was proposing would appear to be more than just a new method ââ¬â they would be revolutionary. He stated that the outset that ââ¬Å"scientific managementâ⬠would require a complete mental revolution on the part of management and workers. Henry Fayol (1841-1924) ââ¬â father of modern management theory He divided industrial into 6 groups: technical, commercial, financial, security, accounting & managerial And formulated the 14 Principles of management which we are using it every day in our daily activities, allow me to enumerate them and somehow expand a little. Division of Labor ââ¬â allows for job specialization, Authority and responsibility ââ¬â Fayol noted firms can have too much specialization leading to poor quality and worker involvement. Unity of command ââ¬â employees should have one boss. Line of authority ââ¬â a clear chain from top to bottom of the firm. Centralization ââ¬â the degree to which authority rests at the very top. Unity of direction ââ¬â one plan of action to guide the organization. Equity ââ¬â treat all employees fairly in justice and respect. Order ââ¬â each employee is put where they have the most value. Initiative ââ¬â encourages innovation. Discipline ââ¬â obedient, applied, respectful employees needed. Remuneration of Personnel ââ¬â The payment system contributes to the success. Stability of nature ââ¬â long term employment is important. General interest over personal interest ââ¬â the organization takes precedence over the individual. Esprit de corps ââ¬â share enthusiasm or devotion to the organization. I have added here some of the theorist I researched which I consider to be worth sharing. Mary Parker ââ¬â an influential leader in early managerial theory. a. Suggested workers help in analyzing their jobs for improvements b. The worker knows the best way to improve the job c. If workers have the knowledge of the task, then they should control the task. The Hawthorne Studies It appears that the workers enjoyed the attention they received as part of the study and were more productive. Contingency Theory ââ¬â Assumes there is no one best way to manage The environment impact the organization and managers must be flexible to react to environmental changes The way the organization is designed, control systems selected, depend on the environment Conclusion As management theories evolved in centuries, the principles and ideas were never changed yet it has been a guiding value to those who are in public nor private service and to those who are employed and business people. Itââ¬â¢s amazing how they have passed on to many generations of people who wanted to learn and use the theories. The theories have been explicit in explanations and user-friendly, though there are theorists who have presented different thoughts on the earlier theorist but if we examine deeply, itââ¬â¢s all the same, only presented in different design. Before I end, I would just like to emphasize the last part of the theories because it speaks about our relationship with the environment and how we will relate environmental, Technological environments change rapidly so must managers.
